When Lady Gaga arrived at the recent Golden Globes Red Carpet, her stunning Valentine gown had an air of familiarity. It wasn’t that Gaga was repeating another actress’s look, or even wearing a duplicate dress. The performer has always been known for her often-shocking fashion choices. Her matching lavender hairdo was proof that some personality quirks will never be contained. However, the dress was a fitting homage to an actress from the past.

The lavender gown not only brushed the floor but trailed far behind the star as she made her way down the carpet. Though the neckline was simple, Gaga added a bit of her signature flair with the oversized, poofy sleeves. However, in this case, the only statement Lady Gaga was trying to make was one of admiration. After all, she was up for an award for a role that a number of other iconic women have played before her.

In her dress choice, Lady Gaga chose to honor the late Judy Garland, who played the same role in the second iteration of A Star is Born. The 1954 film featured a scene which included Garland singing clad in a violet gown. Though Lady Gaga’s chosen outfit is definitely a modern take on Garland’s mid-century costume, the similarities are clear.

This isn’t the first time that Lady Gaga and her co-star/director Bradley Cooper have paid tribute to the three previous versions of A Star is Born. While the story has been told with varying levels of success, for Garland, the role was a major comeback. Garland’s performance earned both the Golden Globe Award and the Academy Award. While Lady Gaga may not have quite made the cut for the Golden Globe, she’s expected to receive an Academy Award nomination in the coming weeks. Perhaps there she’ll follow in Garland’s footsteps again.
