Valentino to Remove Fur by 2022

The Italian designer brand is the latest to announce it will remove fur from its future collections in support of sustainable fashion and manufacturing. The fashion house will drop fur from all of its subsidiaries as well, including Valentino Polar. The company’s CEO Jacopo Venturini released a statement to share the news. He also said the company will be moving toward researching alternative materials that are gentle to the environment and still uphold the brand’s high standards.

It’s no secret that fur has been widely favored by fashion designers for decades, but it seems its reign is about to end. Just earlier this year, Balenciaga and Alexander McQueen also announced they would be removing fur from their fashion lines. It was actually Gucci that famously set the start for a fur-free luxury fashion movement when the iconic house stopped using the material back in 2017. Similarly, other fashion giants like Versace, Prada, Michael Kors, Chanel, and Adidas have also adopted similar fur-free policies.

The movement is gaining momentum, thus making the entire luxury fashion industry readjust its designs and policies in the coming years. It’s not just brands that are taking measures, but retailers as well. Chains like Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, and Macy’s have also pledged to remove all fur fashion items from their stores.

Valentino Moves Toward Sustainable Materials

The designer house’s decision to champion cruelty-free materials in its fashion lines has been met with praise both from the industry and from animal rights groups. Both the Humane Society International (HSI) and the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) commended Valentino for joining the fur-free movement. It’s decisions like this that shape modern-day legislation, like the case of California banning the sale and manufacturing of fur in 2019.
